4 Signs You Need Brake Repair

August 5, 2024

Is it time to get those brakes checked out? Many people don't know what to look for or ignore the warning signs that something may be wrong with their braking system. Stay safe on the road by being proactive about maintenance. Here are four common indicators that your brakes need attention or repairs.

1. Squealing or Grinding Noises

One of the most obvious clues your brakes are failing is hearing loud, high-pitched squealing or grinding noises when you hit the pedal. In our experience, this usually means the brake pads have worn down completely to the metal backing. Metal on-metal grinding indicates your brake pads need a replacement right away. Prolonged grinding can damage brake rotors and calipers. Get brake repairs before the problem worsens.

2. Vibration in Your Steering Wheel

Do you feel strong shaking or vibration in the steering wheel when braking? We've observed that this is a sign your brake rotors may be warped. Warped rotors cause the steering wheel and whole vehicle to vibrate when brakes are applied. Rotors can become warped due to excessive heat buildup from heavy braking or faulty materials. Have a mechanic inspect the rotors and resurface or replace them if needed. Addressing vibrations quickly through brake repairs prevents damage down the road.

3. Brake Pedal Pulsation

Inconsistent braking can also signal issues. We tell customers that if the brake pedal pulsates or spikes when pressed, their brake rotors may be warped. A soft or mushy brake pedal that sinks too close to the floor could mean fluid leaks or worn-out pads. Any change in the feel of your brake pedal warrants inspection and potential brake repairs to get it back to normal.

4. Longer Stopping Distances

Finally, pay attention to your braking distances. According to AAA, it's recommended that car owners change their oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Just like oil changes, brakes require routine maintenance. If you notice it's taking you significantly longer to come to a stop at your usual speeds, that indicates a braking problem. Worn pads, low brake fluid, or other issues could be preventing you from stopping as efficiently. Schedule
brake repairs to address the root cause before it leads to unsafe situations.

Ignoring brake problems is never worth the risk. If you notice any of these warning signs, don't delay. Get a brake inspection and complete any recommended brake repairs. Well-maintained brakes will keep you safe and confident behind the wheel. Call Moore 4 Less Auto Repair when you're ready to have your brakes inspected or repaired.
